Conversation Before Dawn

“It’s been a long time.”

“Has it? The years just seem like they mesh together these days.”

“…He hasn’t come for you yet, has he?”

A quiet, humorless laugh. “…No.”

“He will.”

“I’m not one to hold my breath.”

“He promised.”

“Sometimes people make promises they cannot keep.”

“That one does not break his promises.”

A sigh. “Sar–”

“He will come for you.”

“It’s been so many lifetimes–”

“He will come for you.”

“…It hurts too much to keep believing that. You’ll be gone soon enough as well, and then where will I be but back at the beginning? Lifetimes are too long for one person to live alone, hoping for someone to keep a promise year after year with no proof he will. I’ve become too tired to wait any longer…”

Framed against the rapidly-brightening horizon, two women sat side-by-side. As the sun began to peek above the hills, the elder ran a gentle hand through the hair of the younger, the motion like wind ruffling the strands. The world blackened to create a false darkness before the dawn.

“If there is anyone who could cross time to keep such a promise, it would be him.”

“…I know.”

As the first rays of the sun stretched across the land, they revealed only one woman –barely that– with golden-brown hair and eyes that were neither brown nor green. She sat alone upon a cliff ledge, watching the horizon, the land unfolding around her for miles. There was no other in sight.

One Response to “Conversation Before Dawn”

  1. Hey,

Hmm, a very interesting piece. Allow me a wild guess here, for I will say that inside the girl who saw the light rests the soul of another woman, one who seems to not be held to the binds of death or time. Perhaps she remains tied to this world due to that same promise they speak of.

And then there’s the other question. Can such a promise be upheld? Can love surpass the Titan of Time and reach beyond the grasp of death? Who knows…

Anyway, nice blurb and well, keep on writing,
