It was easy to confide in her. Her heart was gentler than she would ever let on, and she listened with a careful ear when he spoke, even if she followed his words with a snide comment. She was not the cold person that so many other people thought she was, so it had been natural to find himself drawn to her friendship. In his world of isolation, he found comfort in her presence.
The first time they had kissed, it had felt like the right action to take, her arms around his neck and body pliant within the grasp of his fingers. She was all warmth and fire. Like their friendship, they had fallen into an easy relationship.

She found him up on the deck, asking after his health, and he had replied in his long-winded fashion with every ailment that struck him at that moment. It made his body turn colder with every word uttered. As she leaned over his shoulder, he turned his face up to meet her kiss, eyes closing with the empty gesture.
In his mind, he could only remember cool hands and a deep betrayal. Something twanged painfully in his chest.
